The Pygmy Hippo are an Endangered species. There is an estimated 3,000 left in the wild. There biggest threat is hunting and habitat loss. The rainforrests are logged and used for farmland. They are one of the illegal animals hunted for food in Liberia.

They are solitary animals which means they live by themselves. They are also nocturnal.

They are mammals that are located in west Africa. They live in the hot lowland rainforests in countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

There most distinctive features is their webbed feet and barrol shaped body. They have leather skin which is a light grey colour. They can only grow to a length of around 1.5 - 1.7 metres in length. They can weigh from 160 kg - 270kg, butthey can still hit a top land speed of 30km per hour.

A female pygmy hippo is pregnant for 7 months before giving birth to a calf. Weaning of a pygmy hippo calf begins at around 8 months old. An average lifespan for a pygmy hippo is 30-40 years.

A pygmy hippo is a herbivore which means they eat plats, fruits and leaves. Apart from humans the pygmy hippo is hunted by Leopards, pythons and crocodiles.

I think the reason why the pygmy hippo is so interesting to me is because it is an animal that you don't here of often. It is unlike any other animal on the planet with looks. It lives in a completely different environment than a regular hippo. I think it is a very sad thing that the biggest threat to the pygmy hippo is us humans. We destroy there habitat and hunt them for food. This is something that needs to be stopped!
